At noon on Friday, September 5 (John Cage’s 102nd birthday) New Music Works - co-sponsored by the San Lorenzo River Alliance and the Santa Cruz Downtown Association - will present a Duck Island Extravaganza: 

 

neW WATER MUSIC Works

 

The program will present a theatrically-staged enactment of Handel’s Water Music and classic percussion music performed by the Grammy nominated William Winant Percussion Group.

 

Your contribution will underwrite the Percussion Group’s performances of 

Steve Reich’s Music for Mallet Instruments,Voices and Organ and 

John Cage’s Fads and Fancies in the Academy.

Our goal is $2,500

The crown jewel landmass of the Santa Cruz archipelago

The heritage of Santa Cruz is inextricably tied with the San Lorenzo River, and this concert will resonate this connection. The River should be a part of any new vision of our downtown, and what better way to advocate that than with music?

 

For just a few dollars, or more, you can join [the late] King George I of England as a patron of NeW WATER MUSIC Works.  And, in return, you will receive great benefits from your generosity, as you will see in the list below.  More importantly, you can be a part of a new vision for downtown Santa Cruz that brings the arts and the environment together beside the San Lorenzo River!

New Music Works, in association with the San Lorenzo River Alliance and Santa Cruz Downtown Association, present a free concert at Duck Island, San Lorenzo Park, and in downtown Santa Cruz

 

12 noon: NMW Ensemble performs

New WATER MUSIC Works by George Frederic Handel (deconstructive embellishments by Philip Collins and Steed Cowart)

 

A Royal mini-barge will circle Duck Island, in tribute to the 1717 aquatic premiere of Water Music on the Thames River

 

12: 30pm: William Winant Percussion Group performs

"Fads and Fancies in the Academy" by John Cage and 

"Music for Mallet Instruments,Voices and Organ" by Steve Reich

A second stage to the day of September 5, 2014 is a 2-4pm musical street collage on the Pacific Garden Mall. From doorways, balconies, rooftops and roadways, the finest musicians of the Bay Area will perform sweet, overlapping sonorities and songs.
