DESCRIPTION
For KoreAmerica II New Music Works revisits the mysterious beauties of Korean music via the vibrance of the Piri, the Korean oboe. Chi-wan Park, considered one of Korea's most accomplished virtuosi of the piri, will perform newly composed works by Korean and American composers, along with traditional Korean repertoire for both the piri and its heftier, rural sibling, the taepyungso.
The Piri will be heard in a number of unusual instrumental combinations, including modernist applications for the instrument in the world premieres of two duets, Pia by Hyo-shin Na, for piri and piano; and Where, oh sin, by NMW Artistic Director, Philip Collins.

KoreAmerica II features works for Korean and Western instruments by living composers Philip Collins, Hi Kyung Kim, Hyo-shin Na, Frederic Rzewski, along with traditional court music, folk songs, Sanjo and Shaman Ritual music for Piri and Taepyungso.
