Music for Linda
Music for Linda

This musical celebration in memory of Linda Ann Markell is a concert ritual, beginning with the quiet, wordless invocation of John Cage’s A Flower, and concluding with a jubilant improvisational finale on Frank Zappa’s King Kong. The evening weaves diverse moods and styles, drawing together Martin Luther’s legendary hymn, A Mighty Fortress and secular songs of Latin America. Chamber music and “art rock” cavort beneath radar by some of Linda Markell’s favorite composers encompass a delicate-to-dynamic range of musical climates.

• Exciting new choral music by Philip Collins and Sid Robinovitch
• Gorgeous chamber orchestra music by Lou Harrison (premiered by Cabrillo Music Festival, 1993)
• Sound meditations for voice – Violin - Piano by John Cage and Hyo-shin Na
• (Very) Rarely performed Stravinsky masterpiece!! Septet!!!!
• Two Zappa gems with unleashed improvisations!!

All inside the intimate chapel at Calvary Episcopal Church, the lovely red church, across from the Nicolodeon Theatre, at Cedar and Lincoln, in downtown Santa Cruz!!

Linda Ann Markell
This program is a memorial concert, honoring Linda Ann Markell, beloved wife of Richard Markell, a longtime member of New Music Works Board of Directors. Though not a board member, officially, Linda was a cheerful supporter and tireless worker for New Music Works as well as a dear friend. Linda was a discerning enthusiast of eclectic tastes; she listened incisively, embraced new experiences and had a great sense of humor. With Richardís guidance, we have prepared a concert that we think Linda would have liked.

This project is supported by funding from the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County, Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County; the Ann & the Gordon Getty Foundation
