Etty BenZaken wins audiences’ and critics’ acclaim for performing contemporary works, many of which are written especially for her voice. Well versed in today’s extended vocal techniques, she feels equally at home performing folk songs from her own Sephardic heritage and from other ethnic communities, in 20 different languages. Her singing has been recorded on radio, television, CDs and documentaries. A prolific creative artist, BenZaken is the author of two published novels (now freely available for Hebrew readers on her blog), and the writer, director and designer of bilingual (Hebrew and Arabic) Music-Theater shows, created in collaboration with her husband, composer Eitan Steinberg. Her original vocal works accompany video-art works and visual-art exhibitions. BenZaken’s education includes music studies at the Jerusalem Rubin Academy, theater studies at the Jerusalem School of Visual Theater, a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree (both with distinction) in literature from the University of Haifa. Since 2005 she teaches at the Theater Department of the University of Haifa, Israel.
KATE CAMPBELL, pianist
Hailed as a “brilliant pianist” (Financial Times), Kate Campbell performs frequently as a soloist and chamber musician specializing in 20th and 21st century music. She has worked closely with leading composers such as Pulitzer Prize winners Steve Reich and David Lang, and is at home with styles ranging from thorny modernism, to “sleek and spirited” minimalism, to indie classical.
Kate is the pianist for the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players. She is the co-founder and pianist of the interdisciplinary duo KATES, which intertwines new solo piano music with new dance. The duo has been featured at NYSoundCircuit, Dance Conversations Festival at the Flea Theater in New York, and Omaha Under the Radar. As the pianist in the contemporary ensemble REDSHIFT, this year she will continue a guest artist residency at California State University East Bay, premiering works by faculty and student composers. Having recently relocated to the Bay Area, current freelance projects include performances with New Keys, Hot Air, the Garrett+Moulton Dance Company, and Switchboard Music Festival. She is also proud to be on the team of organizers for the Omaha Under the Radar Festival, featuring new music, dance, and theater in her hometown of Omaha, NE. She can be heard on New Amsterdam Records.
