KOREAMERICA IV
The KoreAmerica series began in 2001, when we hosted the Korean Contemporary Ensemble. For KoreAmerica IV, we will be hosting three renowned virtuosi of Korean instruments. Shon Hwayoung, Bay Area-based performer of the kayageum (board zither); Gamin Kang, Los Angeles-based performer of the Piri (Korean oboe), and Soo neon lyuh, New Jersey-based performer of the Haegeum (the Korean, 2-string violin).
All three artists will be premiering new works of their own at KoreAmerica IV, as well as music by area composers that incorporate Western instruments and electronic media. Although we have hosted performers of the Kayageum and Piri in past programs, KoreAmerica IV marks the first time, that the haegeum will be featured. Haegeum master, Soo neon lyuh is celebrated as much for her virtuosic skills as she is as a composer. For this occasion Soo neon lyuh will premiere a new work for percussionist William Winant and herself to premiere.
